Underground Series Hybrid Training Gloves

Always use the right tool for the right job. There are four types of gloves used in Mixed Martial Arts: MMA training gloves; MMA fight gloves; Sparring Gloves; and Bag Gloves. Each glove has its use; using the wrong glove for the right training leads to headaches and worse, literally.

Each of the four glove types in turn have a variety of designs; below we will focus on differences in Training Gloves. In the same way that professional boxers commonly fight with 10 oz gloves, but train with 16 oz gloves,  MMA Fight Gloves are 4 oz, but training is generally done with a 6 oz glove, called a Training Glove. Although originally intended for training, these larger MMA gloves, sometimes available in 7 and even 8 oz. sizes, were quickly adopted worldwide for amateur competitions.

Do not stick a sharp stick in your eye, and do NOT train with MMA fight gloves. They are too hard, and faces are too fragile, and scars bleed too quickly. If you are going to train MMA with strikes, you need a Training Glove.

There are two types of Training Gloves. One has an encased foam padding with finger loops underneath it. These straps can be attached to the underside of the glove, or can be stitched through to the top. This design is an adaptation of the boxing glove design to the needs of MMA. More recently, a new training glove was developed, combining the best elements of the traditional training glove with the best elements of the fight glove. This new style glove is called a Hybrid Training Glove.

The Hybrid Training Glove has separate, secure fingers like a fight glove, but far more padding across the knuckles and back of the fist. Further, it is held in place firmly with a thumb strap, so the leverage provided by the size of the extra padding does not cause the glove to shift. While not providing quite as much protection as a traditional training glove, the hybrid glove is still an excellent choice for training.
Gloves come in leather or artificial material; ONLY use leather in your training. You wouldn't feel cool in a club wearing a vinyl jacket, and it is not cool to wear vinyl gloves in the gym.

We all train in a tough sport, and these are tough times. Budgets are fixed and sometimes shrinking; one extra dollar spent on gear is a dollar that is not spent on another piece of equipment, or on travel, or a seminar. We developed the Underground Series MMA Hybrid Training Glove as a durable, high-quality glove that is affordable in these tough times.
