Each of the four glove types in turn have a variety of designs; below we will focus on differences in Training Gloves. In the same way that professional boxers commonly fight with 10 oz gloves, but train with 16 oz gloves, MMA Fight Gloves are 4 oz, but training is generally done with a 6 oz glove, called a Training Glove. Although originally intended for training, these larger MMA gloves, sometimes available in 7 and even 8 oz. sizes, were quickly adopted worldwide for amateur competitions.
Do not stick a sharp stick in your eye, and do NOT train with MMA fight gloves. They are too hard, and faces are too fragile. If you are going to train MMA with strikes, you need a Training Glove.
There are two types of training gloves. One has an encased foam padding with finger loops underneath it. These straps can be attached to the underside of the glove, or can be stitched through to the top. The other type has separate fingers, with padding on the front of each finger. When the fingers are separated, the term Hybrid Glove is commonly used, as it combines elements of the MMA fight glove, and the traditional MMA fight glove.
Either style of training glove - fingers or fingerless - can have a completely open palm, a thumb strap, a thumb and palm strap, a fully enclosed thumb, or an enclosed palm. There are also gloves with a palm and grip bar; these are NOT for sparring. There are many different style of foam available, both open, and closed cell, molded or hand cut, multi or single layer. Gloves come in leather or artificial material; ONLY use leather in your training.
We all train in a tough sport, and these are tough times. Budgets are limited, so an extra dollar spent on gear is a dollar that is not spent on another piece of equipment, or on travel, or a seminar. We developed the Underground Series MMA Training Glove as a durable, high-quality glove that is affordable in these tough times,.
Glove Sizing Chart
Open up your hand like a karate chop, and them stick your thumb up. Measure all the way around the knuckles, using a piece of string if necessary. Then compare with the chart below to get proper sizing. If you plan on using wraps, go up a size. Also keep in mind that with all leather products there is a small amount of stretch that occurs during the break-in process.
